Intel Stock Surges 10% After Naming Lip-Bu Tan as CEO

Intel Company

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) shares jumped 10% in after-hours trading following the appointment of Lip-Bu Tan as the company’s new permanent CEO. Tan, the former CEO of Cadence Design Systems, brings extensive experience in semiconductor technology, having led a company that provides critical design software used by major chipmakers, including Intel. He previously served on Intel’s board but stepped down last year due to other commitments.

Tan replaces interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and MJ Holthaus, who took over leadership after the abrupt departure of former CEO Pat Gelsinger last December. His appointment comes at a crucial time as Intel navigates the aftermath of a challenging four-year period under Gelsinger, during which the company’s stock plummeted nearly 75%. Under Gelsinger, Intel invested billions in expanding into semiconductor manufacturing through a new foundry business, but mounting costs and declining sales led to investor pressure for cost-cutting measures and restructuring, ultimately resulting in his departure.

Currently, Intel is investing $20 billion in a chip manufacturing facility in Ohio. However, the company has faced criticism for losing ground in the AI market and falling behind competitors like Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD). Last year, Intel was removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average and replaced by Nvidia, signaling its struggles in the highly competitive semiconductor industry.

What’s Next for Intel?

Tan now becomes Intel’s fourth CEO in seven years, and speculation is growing that the company could become a takeover target, although no formal offers have emerged. Over the past year, Intel’s stock has declined 52%.

Is INTC Stock a Buy?

Intel’s stock holds a consensus “Hold” rating among 31 Wall Street analysts. The rating includes one “Buy,” 25 “Hold,” and five “Sell” recommendations over the past three months. The average price target of $22.76 suggests a potential 10.06% upside from current levels.
