A staggering 2.3 million credit and debit card details have been leaked on the dark web as cybercriminals escalate attacks using infostealer malware, according to a report by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.
From 2023 to 2024, hackers infected over 26 million Windows devices with data-stealing malware, which silently extracts sensitive information, including banking credentials and credit card details. Alarmingly, financial data is compromised in every 14th infection, fueling underground markets for stolen credit card information.
Infostealer Malware on the Rise: Biggest Cyber Threats of 2024
Kaspersky expert Sergey Shcherbel warns that the actual number of malware infections is likely much higher:
“Cybercriminals often leak stolen data months or even years after the initial breach. As time passes, we continue to see past infections resurface on the dark web.”
Among the most dangerous types of infostealer malware in 2024:
🔴 Redline Malware – The most widespread data-stealing malware, responsible for 34% of all infections this year.
🟠 Risepro Malware – Specializes in stealing banking credentials, passwords, and cryptocurrency wallet data. Its infection rate soared from 1.4% in 2023 to 23% in 2024.
These malicious programs spread through cracked software, game mods, and key generators, targeting unsuspecting users who download pirated software.
How to Protect Your Bank Accounts from Cybercriminals
To prevent identity theft and financial fraud, Kaspersky recommends the following cybersecurity measures:
✅ Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – Adds an extra layer of security to online accounts.
✅ Monitor Bank Transactions & Alerts – Watch for any unauthorized activity.
✅ Avoid Downloading Cracked Software & Mods – These often contain hidden malware.
✅ Run Full Security Scans Regularly – Use a reliable antivirus software to detect and remove cyber threats.
As cybercrime continues to evolve, protecting your financial data with strong cybersecurity practices is more important than ever. Stay vigilant and secure your digital life!
